Sokoto to administer malaria drugs to 1.8m kids


In a bid to mitigate the effect of malaria infection across Sokoto state, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has flagged off the house-to-house campaign for the administration of preventive drugs which targets estimated 1.8 million kids.


Speaking in Isa LGA of the state during the flag off, Tambuwal said “government has adopted many strategies in solving the menace of malaria and other health related diseases such as capacity building for the health personnel, provision of health care facilities and provision of essential drugs among others.”

He said his administration “would pay more attention to human resources development, equipping of health care facilities and provision of medicament for effective and efficient services to the people at the grassroots,” adding that ‎"the ongoing upgrading and renovation of health facilities at Yabo, Dogon Daji, Silame and Illela will soon be completed.”

While urging local government councils to give maximum support and cooperation to the programme, the governor commended development partners for their contributions as well as appreciated the efforts of Sultanate Council for the social mobilization of the programme.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Balarabe Shehu Kakale, said the Ministry, in collaboration with Malaria Consortium, Ministry for Local Government and State Primary Health Care Development Agency, had trained health personnel to handle the exercise of attending to children of 3- 59 months of age. He disclosed that the exercise would target 1.8 million people.

Team Adobe set to represent Nigeria in South Africa after winning 2016 Unilever Nigeria’s Ideatrophy Competition

Friday August 26, 2016, was another great opportunity for Nigerian undergraduates to showcase unique creativity and great initiative during the grand finale of Unilever Nigeria’s annual IdeaTrophy Undergraduate National Business competition.


Now in its 5th edition, the boot camp for the competition opened in Lagos on the 23rd of August, where contestants were exposed to the wonderful world of Unilever, and were assigned mentors who are seasoned business professionals, to guide them in the development and delivery of their presentations. They also took part in personal development and team building sessions, and had the opportunity to meet and interact with Unilever top executives. It wasn’t all work, as the contestants also enjoyed fun activities like talent shows, aerobics and games.

Out of thousands of entries from various Nigerian universities in this year’s edition, six teams made it to the grand finale. The teams were tasked with the responsibility of developing creative ideas to market Unilever’s leading brand, Close Up.

After a keenly contested competition, Team Adobe from University of Ibadan was crowned winner of the 2016 Unilever Nigeria Ideatrophy competition. The winning team couldn’t contain their joy as the announcement was made. Each member of the team was presented with an Iphone 6s, while the team will also represent Nigeria at the Africa rounds in South Africa, and then proceed to next year’s Unilever Global Future Leader’s League competition in the United Kingdom.

Last night Nicki Minaj and singer Ariana Grande turned heads and eyes as they simulated receiving oral sex from male dancers during a sporty performance at the MTV Video Music Awards 2016.

Police Press Release: Foiled armed robbery attack/death of six notorious armed robbers in Rivers State


The Rivers State Police Command in its sustained efforts to rid the state of all manner of crime and criminality today recorded yet another significant breakthrough in crime fighting. This was practically demonstrated when last night about 8.40pm, there was a distress call about an Armed Robbery attack at Ihuike axis of the East/West Road in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In a swift response, the Ahoada Division led by the DPO immediately mobilized to the scene and the armed robbers on sighting the Police Patrol Van, opened fire on the Police. While an 18 Seater Bus heading from Benin to Port Harcourt was under attack, the driver lost control and the car somersaulted, while 3 persons were feared dead. The rest passengers were rescued. In the ensuing gun battle, the police over powered the armed robbers, six of the armed robbers were fatally wounded and died on their way to the hospital.
The robbers are the notorious gang of armed robbers/kidnappers who have been terrorizing the East/West Road. The leader of the gang is one General Igbudu, who is suspected to be responsible for all the killings in Ahoada community and the kidnapping of fourteen (14) passengers from Omoku to Port Harcourt, three weeks ago and had earlier been declared wanted by the Police. Items recovered from the late robbers include:
1. Four Ak 47 Riffles with S/Nos. 56-3453611, 1979 CH 01020, 56-2614653 KO 358312.
2. Thirty rounds of 7.62mm Ammunition.
3. One Tokarev Pistol S/No. 96301517 with one Round of 9.mm Ammunition.
4. One Brownie Pistol No. F.A 5293
5. Two Military Face Caps.
The injured accident victims are receiving treatment in the hospital. Investigation has been ordered. The Ahoada community is agog as they celebrate the end of an orgy of violence in their area. They are happier for it. As the community will now know peace.
The Commissioner of Police Rivers State, CP Francis Mobolaji Odesanya, wishes to assure the good people of the state to go about their lawful businesses as there is no cause for alarm. The Police is on top of our game and promises to even do better when the synergy between the Police and the public is made more robust. Riot at Kuje Prison, Abuja


There is a riot currently ongoing at Kuje Prison in Abuja. The prison inmates who tried to escape have been teargassed while bullets have been fired into some of the prison cells. The new Comptroller-General (CG) of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Ja'afaru Ahmed, has arrived the prison premises. Mobile police officers have been drafted to the environment.

Meet Shafa'atu Yahaya Yusuf, the first female to attend post-secondary school education in Iyatawa, Katsina State


Shafa’atu Yahaya Yusuf is a beneficiary of the UNICEF/United Kingdom Department for International Development Female Teacher Trainee Scholarship Scheme.

She obtained her National Certificate of Education (NCE) in 2014 in Science with Mathematics as her major course. As the best student in her class she got automatic employment to teach at the school she attended in Iyatawa community, Rimi Local Government of Katsina State.


"I was the first daughter of my community to attend post-secondary education at the NCE level." She proudly said.
She teach mathematics and provides voluntary support in teaching Chemistry, Biology and Physics to the 5 girls she influenced from her community who are pursuing their studies at higher level.
